Let’s talk about… Anxiety

bangor university

Last months in Bangor

My god, have I already been here for more than three weeks? I can’t believe that time is passing so quickly. In my second week here Uni started again and I’m now in full-on student mode. Even though I’ve just started I already know that my time here is going to be a whole lot different than what I’m used to back home. One of those differences is the active and social lifestyle that is normal here. I have joined the photography and dance society, which both have meetings at least once a week. We don’t have those tight knitted societies back at home, or at least not ones that are based on a shared interest like photography. Another thing that’s different here is that the beauty of nature keeps astounding me. I’m used to a different kind of beauty, for example I am now surrounded by mountains instead of flat grasslands and I can walk to the pier and look out over the bay instead of only seeing the beach on a nice summer’s day. Bangor is a small city that made me feel at home very quickly, although there’s still enough to explore. Like when me and a friend walked up into the surrounding mountains to look down on Bangor from above and got to enjoy the amazing view of the city and the university. The other day we went to Conwy, a walled city near Bangor and while driving there we had to drive through a flooded part of the road. This isn’t something you’d see in The Netherlands, but apparently that’s not a strange thing to come across in Wales. You know that feeling of anxiety when making a big decision? But then, when you’ve actually done it, you know that you’ve actually made the best decision ever? That’s what I’m feeling right now. I was so scared before, but now that I’m actually here, I can’t even remember what I was so scared of. I’m looking forward to all the adventures I’m going to go on while I’m here (like zip lining on the longest and fastest track in Europe, eek!). Time is flying by! – Bangor Week 2 & 3

I can’t believe I’m here! – a new adventure Exactly one week ago (Wednesday) I arrived in the little town of Bangor, Wales, UK. I was feeling nervous, excited, scared and a whole lot of other things. Just a year ago I was still struggling with my anxiety, I was going to therapy on a regular basis and studying abroad was just an unreachable dream. Because how would I ever be able to leave home for four whole months? But seven days ago now, I was really doing it. I was trading my safe and secure life at home for a new and different one in another country, and moving in with four complete strangers. I said goodbye to my parents, knowing I was probably not going to see them for four months – and yes, there were tears. Then it was time to get settled in. Some of the girls who live in the same building and I decided to go shopping, because we were in desperate need of supplies. We arrived early in the evening, so after that we all just decided to go to bed. The next day we had a mandatory meeting at the main university building. The thing is though, that here in Bangor, the university buildings are mostly located on a mountainside. Which means there’s a lot of uphill walking on our way to uni. And I’m telling you, it’s been a week and I’m still feeling my sore muscles. One thing I know for sure is that I’ll be going back home with very trained legs. Anyway back to the university buildings. The main building is gorgeous. Some people refer to it as the Hogwarts building. It’s a large castle-like building, with high ceilings, fancy doors and stained glass windows. During the next couple of days we went exploring the town, figuring out what to do with our modules and making sure every important university related thing is settled properly. We walked along the pier, on the end of which is a little tearoom where you can eat the most delicious scones. We hung out at a pub near our building and got to know some of the other international students. On Sunday we decided to head to the beach in Rhosneigr by train and it just so happened that we passed through the city with the longest name in Wales. One of the great things about Bangor University is that the societies and sports clubs are free. So I signed up for photography, dancing, the psychology society and in the next couple of weeks I’m going to check out boxing and some volunteering projects as well. To me, moving to a different country, meeting loads of new people and getting used to a whole new environment is a pretty stressful thing. But I’m so proud of myself for handling everything the way that I do (and I rarely say I’m proud of myself). However everyone has their struggles, just like I do. On the first night I was so tired and stressed, that I had a panic attack when I was lying in bed. I had anticipated it was going to be hard for me the first few weeks, and I was probably going to have some moments of anxiety. So I wasn’t surprised that it happened, but I’m happy that that was the only time I had a panic attack thus far. And compared to last year, when I would sometimes suffer through a panic attack multiple times a day, I’m really happy with my progress. So to anyone feeling like their dreams are unreachable because of their anxiety: keep trying! Don’t give up. I’m here, living one of my dreams and I believe that anyone can overcome their fears and live their dream as well. A peachy spring blouse!

Every year at the beginning of spring, I can’t wait for the weather to get warmer. Because that means the jumpers and cardigans will be replaced by blouses and short sleeves. By this time of year I’m really done with wearing thick and warm fabrics all the time, however comfyContinue reading

How to wear peach on peach this spring

Spring is here! The days are getting longer, the weather warmer and the colours brighter. I have always loved bright colours and decided I wanted to integrate colour into my looks more. And what better way is there to do that, than by popping some colour into your daily makeup?Continue reading

Why are you doing it?

I’m stressed and busy, but I wanted to write this post. I’m currently studying/revising for 3 exams. As per usual I’ve started too late and procrastinated like a pro during my courses. So my days kind of look like hours of reading (or trying to) and fighting the urge toContinue reading

Last week I reviewed the Chocolate Nudes eyeshadow palette by Catrice (you can read it here). This week I’ll be reviewing its sister: Absolute Rose. Chocolates, hearts and flowers. Romance is in the air. Half the world is floating on cloud nine and the other half is either wallowing in self-pity or celebrating their single status (okay, okay, I know the world isn’t that black and white). I belong to the latter half, which meansContinue reading

Beauty in the Basics: Brushes 1

Okay, so, beauty basics. I didn’t think I’d do this on here, since I am by no means an expert in beauty. Yes I like trying out all things beauty related, but I’m just a random student (who is broke most of the time and can’t afford expensive brands likeContinue reading
